Theater Group Celebrates Young Playwrights

What is your teenager thinking and feeling? Check in with the Playwrights Project for a look inside the hearts and souls of local young playwrights.

Playwrights Project presents winning plays from this year’s California Young Playwrights Contest at Old Town Theatre beginning January 15, 2009.

Over nine days, you can see dramas and comedies performed on stage from playwrights as young as 11. Some are full productions; others are readings.

“Prom Night” written by Coronado’s Emily Reit, 17, involves absurdly over-protective parents who go to “drastic measures to thwart their daughter’s plans for her prom night.” Sound familiar?

The youngest playwright is Benjamin Rose, 11, from Solana Beach who wrote a play titled “A Case for Vegetarianism.”

Tickets are $20 general admission and $15 for students.

Playwrights Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting literacy, creativity and communication skills through drama-based activities, with an emphasis on inspiring youth and seniors.
