Take a Hike

Cabrillo National Monument celebrates National Trails Day

Go get your heart pumping and take a hike for 2009 National Trails Day on Saturday. Cabrillo National Monument is taking part in the national event.

Hike the 2.5-mile Bayside Trail which winds through one of the most threatened habitats in the world, descending 300 feet from the 19th century Old Point Loma Lighthouse to the trail's end. (There are no restroom facilities or water along the Bayside Trail so don't forget to take care of your needs before you embark on your hike.)

The trail offers spectacular vistas of the San Diego Bay and the cities beyond, and chances to see wildlife and experience solitude.

"We are proud to join the many National Trails Day events around the country, including many at other units of the National Park System. Hiking at Cabrillo national Monument is a wonderful activity that connects visitors to nature, wildlife watching, serenity and history, and promotes good health, and the Bayside Trail is one of the most scenic hiking trails around, " says Monument Superintendent Tom Workman.

Kids, there's the Junior Ranger Program too.
