Students Donate Thousands of Books For Good Cause

Students at La Costa Canyon High School won the school the title of runner-up in a recent international book collection contest, reported our media partner the North County Times. La Costa students collected nearly 30,000 books (they originally collected a total of 49,000, but 29,000 were deemed sellable).

The four month-long contest was put on by Better World Books for the local nonprofit Invisible Children, which helps children suffering through a decades-long civil war in northern Uganda. Student Alexandra Bernatz led her social justice class in the drive, with help from her teacher Christopher Greenslate, who spearheaded the drive here locally.

More than 300,000 students worldwide participated in the book drive. The international effort resulted in the collection and resale of 1.2 million books, according to Better World Books. One student from each of the three winning schools was voted to take a trip to Uganda and Bernatz was chosen by her classmates, reported the North County Times.

"We need to keep letting people know that there is something they can do about the problems in Uganda and how they affect the children over there," Bernatz said. "I'm looking forward to going out and continuing to help out."

Bernatz will leave for Uganda just days after her June graduation, and says that even though the book drive is over, she will continue to spread the word.
