Skip Movies, Go to the Thee-ah-ter

If you’re looking for some entertainment after the gifts are opened this Christmas, consider heading to the theatre. Not the theater – as in movies – but the theatre as in great musicals and plays available around San Diego. Here are a few showing this weekend:

An American Christmas
Lamb’s Players Theatre
Hotel Del Coronado
Through December 28

This three-hour event transports you back to 1908 for a Christmas celebration with the Marshall family - a large, extended family living in the year 1908, who love to entertain new and old friends in the grand American style at their favorite destination, the Hotel del Coronado.

Angel’s Arms
Lamb's Players Theatre
Coronado Resident Theatre
1142 Orange Avenue
Through December 28

Jeffrey Scott is a novelist suffering from a bad case of writer's block. A picturesque, deserted inn called "The Angel’s Arms" may be just the thing to revive his inspiration. But there's more to this odd old hotel and its eccentric caretaker than meets the eye. And he'll soon discover that the hotel's inhabitants and the events that unfold may add an unexpected dose of magic not only to his writing, but to his experience of Christmas.

Xanadu
La Jolla Playhouse
Mandell Weiss Theatre
Through December 31st

A roller-skating musical extravaganza straight from Broadway. If you’re old enough to remember the version with Olivia Newton-John then it’s time to see this again.

A Christmas Carol
North Coast Repertory Theatre
Through December 27th

Union Tribune Critic's Choice for 2007. North Coast Rep is proud to have Ron Choularton return to the stage in his tour-de-force performance as the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
The Old Globe
Balboa Park
Through December 28

America 's favorite holiday fable, back for its 11th joyous year, is a wonderful, whimsical production that will once again jump right off the pages of the classic Dr. Seuss book and onto the Old Globe stage. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! has been hailed by critics: “This Grinch is a smash,” wrote the L.A. Times, while the San Diego Union-Tribune raved, “Jack O'Brien scaled this Globe holiday show to the heartfelt humanity of the season.” Come take part in the fun as the Globe is transformed into snow-covered Who-ville right down to the last can of Who-hash!

Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings
Welk Resort Theatre
Escondido
Through December 28th

The best of Forever Plaid tied-up in a nifty package with a big Christmas bow on top! Filled with Christmas standards that have all been "Plaid-erized", our boys are back to do their Christmas Special.
