Great Ape Awareness Days is under way at the San Diego Zoo.
The event, which began Thursday, is intended to educate the public about the great ape species at the zoo -- bonobos, gorillas and orangutans. The zoo says animal-care staff will discuss what is causing their population declines and about what can be done to help ensure their future in the wild, including responsible consumerism.
