Name That Tree!

A contest is under way in North County offering cash prize and bragging rights for naming a 100-year-old oak tree.

The North County Times reported Wednesday that members of the nonprofit organization Preserve Calavera are hoping to draw attention to the tree standing in a meadow near the intersection of Cannon Road and College Avenue in Carlsbad.  The oak stands in the middle of the land designated for the new high school in the Carlsbad Unified School District.

"We are trying to draw attention to losing our natural heritage," Diane Nygaard, president of Preserve Calaveras told the Times. "Hopefully people will get engaged in preserving (the tree)."

The oak does not meet the requirements necessary to be designated a heritage tree.  But Nygaard has hopes that the tree will be spared.  The architect for the new school said that it looked as if the tree may fall into outdoor or open space.

Submissions to the tree-naming contest can be made to info@preservecalavera.org. There is no limit on the number of entries, which must be received by Feb. 8.
