Lighting Up the Bay

Annual boat parade of lights this weekend

The last chance to see The Boat Parade of Lights is Sunday, Dec 21.  The popular local tradition draws huge crowds to San Diego Bay.  More than a hundred yachts of all sizes take part, decked out in bright, holiday lights and humorous takes on a central theme, this year's being "Rock and Roll Around the Bay".

A crowd of some 80,000 pack the waterfront to watch the boats float by.  You need to arrive early to stake out a prime viewing spot and all the bay front restaurants fill up early.  The parade runs from Shelter Island, along the shoreline of Harbor Island, then to the downtown waterfront by the Maritime Museum, Sea Port Village and then over to Coronado.  The viewing is free and a great family event.

If you want to make a real night of it you can reserve a spot on the historic ferryboat Berkley.  It includes dinner and proceeds benefit the San Diego Maritime Museum.  You can buy tickets for this special event at: www.sdmaritime.org.
