Get Whaled on in Point Loma

An annual whale watch and tide-pool festival is set for this weekend at the tip of Point Loma.

The 22nd annual Whale Watch and Intertidal Life Festival is expected to be the biggest weekend of the year at Cabrillo National Monument. The name says it all regarding this "look and touch but don't take" event.

The educational, family oriented weekend focuses on Pacific animals, whether they are the biggest or the smallest. Up on top at the learning center, experts will tell you everything you'd ever want to know about the gray whale as you, binoculars in hand, try to spot a spout or two out at sea.

Meantime, down below, at the base of the cliffs and along the shoreline, festival-goers can get their hands and feet wet in some of the best tide pools anywhere. Experts will be on hand to explain what you're seeing and not seeing in the shallow pools of ocean water left behind by the receding surf.

The fun runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It's the perfect opportunity to learn first-hand about the many wonders living in the water to our west.
