Calabria Cafe Unveils New Beer

For those who are uninspired to drive all the way to North Park for a cup of coffee – would a bold-flavored 22 oz bottle of beer hit the spot?

Caffe Calabria Roasting Company and Ballast Point Brewery have given birth to a porter beer, Victory at Sea.

Think Guinness and beers of the like, but with a special twist.

Victory at Sea is made from Head Roaster Jesse Fox’s original blend of smooth Colombian and woodsy Costa Rican varietal beans and is blended with local Ballast Point’s best porter. The beer has hints of vanilla, and is very smooth for a porter beer.

Not into beer? This alternative joint offers wine, blended teas, delicious pastries, paninis, and many offerings from the kitchen.

Calabria is void of any pretentious vibes and is filled with friendly baristas brewing up mean espresso shots and a variety of coffees. The walls are lined with sacks of coffee beans and a metal roaster is in the middle of the action.

“A small brewery and a small roast company were a perfect fit,” owner of Calabria Arne Holt said. And while a coffee-flavored beer is not the first of its kind, Holt said it certainly has a local taste to it.

Still confused about what to make of Victory at Sea? An old Czech proverb hanging in the back of the café reminds guests: “A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.”
