Big Kahuna's Endless Summer Never Ended

The man who started the surf-movie craze is taking part in a fundraiser in Oceanside this weekend.

When it comes to surf movies, the man who really made a splash with them is Bruce Brown. The 70-year-old's "Endless Summer" helped the surfing craze get going in 1966. With a budget of $50,000, Brown and his camera toured the world following surfers Mike Hynson and Robert August in their search for the perfect wave.

The movie went on to make more than $30 million, and Brown's laidback comedic narration and top-notch cinematography set the stage for the hundreds of films that followed.

This weekend, San Diegans can hear Brown in person, talking about his legendary film as "Endless Summer" takes top billing at the California Surf Film Festival in Oceanside.  A dozen surf movies will be shown at the Crest Theater over the three-day event that kicks off Friday.
