Sounds Like San Diego: October 15

Ride, Godsmack, the Obsessives and more top Tuesday's live-music options

In the early '90s, my friends and I became obsessed with a show on MTV called "120 Minutes." It would play two hours of music videos from bands that we'd call indie today, though back then it was more "college" or "alternative." There was this wave of British bands dropping music like the Charlatans, Blur, the La's, and Ride. I'd record the show and watch my favorite of the videos on repeat until the following Sunday when a new episode would run. So earlier this summer when I saw that Ride was not only dropping a new record, but including a stop in San Diego on their fall tour, I have to admit I was pretty excited. "This Is Not a Safe Place" dropped a couple months ago and I suspect the show tonight at House of Blues will feature much of the new music while not leaving behind those of us who want to hear the oldies live, particularly someone like me who never got to catch them back then. Around town, Hocus play the Casbah, the Obsessives (and one of our favorite local wunderkinds Jordan Krimston) rock the Che Cafe, and Godsmack headline the Open Air Theatre.
