Celofan Take the Cali Ruta

Tijuana's grunge shoegaze quartet Celofan get a lucky break

Goldenvoice, also known as the producer of Coachella, is taking a refreshing approach with its first border-transcending Latin American fusion tour, Cali Ruta ("Cali Route," in English), which brings together promising indie acts that sing in both English and Spanish.

The tour will be making four West Coast stops including ones at San Diego's Griffin and Tijuana's Moustache Bar. The tour was originally poised to feature AJ Davila, an en Español pop-fueled but-experimental-rhythms act from Puerto Rico, which will now be replaced by Tijuana's grunge shoe-gaze band, Celofan. According to Goldenvoice, the sudden lineup change was due to the “unforeseen circumstance” of Davila not being able to go to California. Also included in the Cali Ruta lineup are three English-language indie-buzz acts: Kiev, Fmlybnd and Bad Suns.

The happy accident gives Celofan the opportunity to pull off a tour with a big promoter like Goldenvoice. On their Facebook page, the band happily reported that they gave an “impeccable stage performance” at Cali Ruta's kickoff at Pomona's Glasshouse. Despite sounding nothing like Davila, Celofan found new fans in Pomona.

As AmericanPancake blogger put it: “As much as I looked forward to seeing [AJ Davila's Terror y Amor], the replacement band Celofan from Tijuana, Mexico, ended up being one of my favorite acts of the night.”
