Barking Up the Right Tree

Sophie Barker gives SoundDiego a heads up on her upcoming Belly Up performance

It’s likely you’ve heard Sophie Barker’s sweet croon at one time or another. Before she struck off on her own, she performed with the breakout UK down-tempo group Zero 7, with which she took leading roles on such hits as “In the Waiting Room” and “Destiny."

Barker is proudly returning to San Diego to co-headline the Belly Up with electronic outfit the Egg on May 13 in support of her most recent solo record, Seagull.

After spending much of her career focused on working with other musicians such as Zero 7, KK, Bliss and Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins, Barker is upbeat and as motivated as ever about working on her own material.

"It may have taken me longer to become the artist I am today, but maybe I was meant to find myself through all of these influences," Barker said, referring to the impact her wide array of experiences in genres from folk to electronic has had on her output.

Barker also disussed the process of finding her voice.

"[As a solo artist], you express your journey of music," Barker said. "You can hide behind other personalities in a band. It’s taken me a while to get here.”

The hyper-collaborator revealed that in addition to performing her original material at the Belly Up, she would also join the Egg onstage as a vocalist, assuring fans that “their EDM sound meshes with our downtempo rock very well” and that being involved in both acts is very exciting for her.

A third act taking the stage that night will be San Diego’s very own 9theory, a.k.a. Gabe Lehner from the electronic duo Inspired Flight. Doors are at 7 p.m. at the 21+ venue. Tickets are available here.
