It’s going to be a moody, sexy affair on Tuesday when one of the biggest breakthrough bands of the year, Los Angeles’ Haim, hits the Casbah for its first show in San Diego since releasing the excellent debut album Days Are Gone.
Named after the group members’ surname, the R&B-influenced indie band -- consisting of sisters Este, Danielle and Alana -- is riding a stunning wave of buzz. n the past year alone, Haim have opened for such arena-big groups as Mumford & Sons and the XX, signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation management group, debuted in the Billboard Top 10 with Days Are Gone and attracted one of the largest crowds at the Austin City Limits music festival last weekend.
What’s made Haim so appealing is their dynamic alternative hybrid sound, which sees the sisters mixing together swooning, pop-driven soft rock and ethereal, ’90s-era R&B melodies. Songs like “Falling” and “The Wire” feature playful bass lines, polished guitar riffs, melodramatic synth tones and Este’s seductive, crooning vocal style. The result is an atmosphere that is alluring, warm, and super dance-friendly. Expect nothing short of unabashed brilliance at the sold-out Casbah show. Seeing that Haim are blowing up at the moment, this will probably be the last chance fans will have to see the band perform in such an intimate venue.
Be sure to show up early to catch the bombastic opening band IO Echo. Another much-hyped L.A. group, IO Echo make freaky, towering, industrial-style noise rock. Singer Ioanna Gika’s piercing, high-pitched vocal delivery compliments dark sonic textures and Far Eastern influences, yielding a dramatic, mystifying musical experience.
