The massive Christmas tree destined to adorn the U.S. Capitol next month is stopping through Southern California as it wends its way from the Sierra Nevada to the East Coast.
The 62-foot white fir tree will be on display Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles. On Monday it will be shown at Victoria Gardens Mall in Rancho Cucamonga from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
A giant trailer is taking the California-grown tree on a national tour before delivering it to the Capitol Hill on Nov. 28. The tree was chosen from among a number of tall green candidates in the Stanislaus National Forest, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
It is 118 years old and weighs 8,300 pounds.
Capitol Tree coordinator Maria Benech said the tree candidates had been suggested by the public and Forest Service employees.
This is the fourth time a California tree has been chosen to be the official U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree.
The Capitol Christmas Tree website said 5,000 handmade ornaments made by Californians, reflecting the “California Shine” theme will show the state’s rich cultural and ecological diversity.
Benech said it will take about a week to install and decorate the tree.
A tree lighting ceremony at the front of US Capitol is scheduled on Dec. 6.
