Google's original plan was to organize all the information on the web. In the course of doing that, it just decided to make a new turn: To take some of that content, and eliminate it.
Specifically, online child pornography.
The Mountain View search giant, in its blog, announced a plan to contribute five million dollars to the fight, including two million dollars to create a Child Protection Technology Fund.
From the blog post written by Jacquelline Fuller, the Director of Google Giving:
"It is critical that we take action as a community—as concerned parents, guardians, teachers and companies—to help combat this problem.
Child sexual exploitation is a global problem that needs a global solution."
The post goes on to point out that all organizations fighting child pornography need to work together, and Google wants to help break down barriers between the organizations.
U.S. & World
We've seen technology companies work to fight child porn before - including Google itself. The effort just got a big boost from Google's latest move. We'll continue to follow the effort.
