Punchless Padres Lose to Marlins

Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy might be on to something. If you want run support, do it yourself. And Kennedy did just that, hitting his first major league home run in the second inning to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately he supplied the only offense of the evening for the Friars.

Kennedy also delivered on the mound. He tied a career high with twelve strikeouts over seven innings of work.

The game went to extra innings. In the 11th Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run blast off of Dale Thayer to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead. That's how it ended.

Game two of the series is Friday night at Petco Park.
