Video: Ovechkin lifts host, makes jokes at music awards

OK, so it wasn't Lady Gaga shooting sparklers from her bustier. (Big Leafs fan, the Gaga.) But Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals was a presenter at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto over the weekend, and managed to partake in the usual banter and awkward comedy that comes with the gig:

As the Globe & Mail wrote:

Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin provided a surprising moment when asked how he would celebrate winning a MuchMusic award, he effortlessly hoisted VJ Tim Deegan over his shoulder.

A MuchMusic VJ, of course, being the only thing Ovechkin had the opportunity to lift over his head this postseason ...

Ovie rocked his signature fashion line and flippy-floppies, looking oddly like John Krasinski during a transformation into Mr. Hyde. Sorry to see Ovechkin didn't take this opportunity to resurrect his glam rock look from the Capitals Jumbotron music video; nor did he bellow "Toronto, Are You READY TO ROCK?" in his Russian warble, like he did for D.C.

Not sure where Ovechkin was when Perez Hilton was assaulted after the awards, but he really shouldn't be blamed for failing to break up the fight ... what with Donald Brashear not being there and all. Or Alexander "Bongos" Semin, for that matter.

Now that Ovechkin's conquered the MMVAs, we can only hope to see him sing a duet with Neil Patrick Harris at next year's Tony Awards. And no, not "Puttin' on the Ritz" from "Young Frankenstein." No matter how perfect it would sound.

H/T to Puck Buddy Vicki D. for the story.
