Padres Make a Play for Tony Gwynn's Son

Gwynn Jr. coming home in exchange for outfielder Jody Gerut

While the Jake Peavy deal to the White Sox is still up in the air, the Padres have made a trade to bring home a local favorite home.

Padres outfielder Jody Gerut was traded Thursday to the Milwaukee Brewers for Tony Gwynn Jr. The 26-year-old Gwynn was hitting over .300 this year at Milwaukee's Triple A affiliate in Nashville.

Gerut, 31, batted .223 with 4 HR and 14 RBI for the Padres this season.

Gwynn got the news of the trade in a call from his Hall of Fame father, who played for the Padres for 20 seasons and is now San Diego State's baseball coach.

The younger Gwynn played parts of three seasons in the majors.
