The punchless Padres put another bagel on the scoreboard Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park. The visiting Royals scored more than enough runs in the first inning to secure the 8-0 win.
Padres starting Andrew Cashner (2-5) wasn't at his best, but two errors by the normally reliable Everth Cabrera didn't help matters. Kansas City pushed three runs across the plate in the first inning on three hits, a walk and those two errors. By the time the dust settled the damage was done. The Pads trailed 3-0 after a half-inning and Cashner had thrown 43 pitches. The Padres ace lasted just four innings, taking his fifth loss of the season.
The Padres scoring chances were few and far between. Their best opportunity was in the second inning. With runners on first and second and two outs Alexi Amarista hit a grounder down the line that was gloved by first baseman Eric Hosmer past the bag. He had no play to first, but Maybin overran second base. Hosmer threw behind him to get the final out and end the threat.
James Shields (4-3) pitched seven shutout innings in the Royals victory. After dropping the first game of the series, Kansas City won the final two.
The Padres begin a four-game set with the Marlins at Petco Park Thursday night. First pitch is at 7:05 PM.
