Local Athletes Named to U.S. Men's Water Polo Team

Layne Beaubien, 36, and 29-year-old Jesse Smith will be competing for the gold

Two San Diegans were named to the U.S. Men’s Water Polo team on Monday.

Layne Beaubien, 36, and 29-year-old Jesse Smith will be competing for the gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games along with their 11 other teammates.

Both athletes are from Coronado. Beaubien played for Stanford University and Smith attended Pepperdine University. The pair plays together at New York Athletic Club.

This is the third Olympic Summer Games for Smith, a utility player and defenseman Beaubien. The pair competed in the 2004 and 2008 Games of the Olympiad. Ten of the 13 U.S. Men’s Water Polo teammates competed together in the XXIX Olympics in Beijing, China where they earned a silver medal.

The U.S. Men’s team recently took fourth place at the FINA World League Super Final in Almaty, Kazakhstan and are looking forward to representing their country this summer.
