Players Should Get a Say in NFL's Schedule Expansion Plan

New NFLPA boss DeMaurice Smith should make sure the players' voices are heard before the NFL expands its schedule

I'm going to stand by the opinion, expressed here Wednesday, that commissioner Roger Goodell's idea to expand the NFL season and cut out preseason games is a good one. But in a couple of places today, the thought has emerged that there might be some issues with it.

Bob's Blitz, citing a Seattle Post-Intelligencer story from last spring, makes the point that playing in the NFL shortens players' lives, and that adding two regular-season games per year might exacerbate that. Certainly, if that's the case, this bears a deep second look. Nobody's going to sit here and advocate the shortening of human lives in the name of more football:
