Redskins Sign Journeyman Backup QB Josh Johnson

The Redskins are picking Josh Johnson up from the AAF where he had just signed a contract with San Diego last week

The Washington Redskins signed backup quarterback Josh Johnson after the team's other backup quarterback, Colt McCoy, suffered a season-ending injury.

Johnson has not attempted a pass in a regular-season NFL game since 2011. He played his college career at San Diego (FCS) and was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

NBC Sports Washington reports that between 2009 and 2013, Johnson played in 29 NFL games with the Bucs, Browns and Bengals. Since then, Johnson has been a member of numerous teams including the 49ers, Jets, Colts, Bills, Ravens, Giants, Texans and Raiders, but never played a down of football.

The Redskins are picking Johnson up from the AAF where he had just signed a contract with San Diego last week, NBC Sports Washington reports.

McCoy fractured his fibula late in the first quarter for the Redskins' 28-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

McCoy got his chance because Smith suffered a broken tibia and fibula just weeks ago that has threatened his career.

The Redskins announced other moves Wednesday. Cornerback Quinton Dunbar, receiver Trey Quinn and guard Jonathan Cooper have been put on injured reserve. They also added guard Zac Kerin, center Demetrius Rhaney and defensive end Marcus Smith as free agents.
