USD Loses NCAA Tourney Star

USD's NCAA tournament basketball team must play on without senior guard considered 'heart and soul' of the Toreros.

The Toreros lost their star guard in a game with San Diego State over the weekend, but the team is pressing on.

"I'm devastated for the kid," Coach Bill Grier said after his team lost the city championship over the weekend.

Brandon Johnson, a senior guard, ruptured his Achilles' tendon in the 57-46 at Cox Arena. All he could think about was his team after the loss.

"We didn't take care of the ball," Johnson said. "Coach said we couldn't get in a rat race with them."

In 2007, Johnson was the West Coast Conference tournament MVP.
