The “Y” Drops “MCA”

What's in a name? A new look for the former YMCA

For many people, the YMCA  is simply referred to as the "Y".  Beginning Monday, that's what the non-profit organization is officially calling itself.

The "Y" announced the change in Washington D.C. complete with a new logo.  It's the first new version of the logo in more than 40 years.

The YMCA originally stood for Young Men's Christian Association.  It's been around for 166 years in the United States.  The organization is hoping the logo and name change will also help get the message of its mission out into the community.

"This strategy," said Kate Coleman, senior vice president, " is designed to increase awareness of the immense impact the Y has on millions of lives,to ensure that people across the country truly understand the Y and the benefits of engaging with us."

The "Y" says it'll take about five years to complete the name change at all of its branches across the country including those here in San Diego County.
