The Need for Speed

Sure, electric cars save gas, but now they finally put a tiger in the tank.

A group of UCSD students is set to race their formula-style hybrid-car against similar vehicles from 30-plus other schools at the New Hampshire International Speedway.

The team from the UC San Diego Society of Automotive Engineers team built its car using a $15,000 grant from Plug In America.

The open-wheel, single-seat cars have to conform to a strict set of rules -- or formulas -- that emphasize, encourage, and promote drive-train innovation and fuel efficiency. The cars have to use at least 15 percent less gas than standard formula race cars operated under the same conditions.
