The $100 Million Man?

Contract negotiations with Chargers Philip Rivers could break the $100 million mark, according to a published report.

Discussions about a long-term contract for the Chargers QB will kick off soon, GM A.J. Smith told the San Diego Union Tribune earlier this week.

"You offer a contract and hope for the best," Smith told the paper. "We'll have a contract [offer] and hope it's successful. If not, we have the franchise [tag]."

Rivers led the Chargers to the playoffs during the past two seasons. Last year, he threw for more than 4,000 yards.

The paper reported that the price tag for inking Rivers could be in the same neighborhood as what it cost to sign Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, who was the happy recipient of a $102 million eight-year contract last March.
