Team USA Slugs Its Way Into WBC 2nd Round

Lots of offense in drubbing of Venezuela

The U.S.A. is supposed to have the best pitching in the World Baseball Classic.  Anybody's staff looks good when it has 15 runs to work with.

Team America slugged three more home runs to beat Venezuela 15-6 Sunday night in TorontoKevin Youkilis, Adam Dunn and Ryan Braun all went deep, part of a 16-hit attack.  Most of the damage was done in a monster 6th inning.  The Americans scored eight runs, three of them coming on a bases-loaded double by Chris Ianetta.  With the win the U.S. clinched a spot in the 2nd round in Miami.

With Jake Peavy and Roy Oswalt at the top of the rotation, most experts thought the boys in red, white and blue would have to win with superior pitching.  After hitting six home runs in two games, the Americans know they can also win in a slugfest, which will made them awfully hard to beat.

Padres closer Heath Bell made his WBC debut.  He threw the 9th inning, allowing one run.
