Counting Down to the World Series

The Giants win the pennant for the first time since 2002

In just over 24 hours, San Francisco will be host to the World Series for the first time in eight years. The excitement generated by a team that describes itself as castoffs and misfits is hitting a fever pitch even before that first pitch is thrown at AT&T Park.

This time around, the Giants got to the World Series thanks to a true team effort and not on the shoulders of one player (named Barry Bonds). That has fans holding their head a little bit higher than in 2002 and they can express their loyalty with no apologies.

Giants Dugout stores have been packed ever since the Giants clinched at World Series berth Saturday night in Philadelphia. In an instant it seemed the entire Bay Area became flush with folks wearing orange.

It turns out fans wanting to get into a game are going to have to be flush with cash. A spokeswoman for the StubHub Website says the site has never seen so many inquiries for World Series games.  AT&T Park sold all of its tickets more than a week ago, so buying from a place like StubHub or eBay is the only choice left.

There are lots of tickets available, but they are pricey.

For Game No. 1 on Wednesday, StubHub is selling tickets ranging from $419 to $20,000. Game No. 2 on Thursday is a bit cheaper with a range of  $343 to $12,000. As of Monday afternoon, the most expensive ticket actually purchased from StubHub was for Game No. 1. Somone paid $6,112 each for two Dugout Club tickets directly behind home plate.

The folks who are actually paid to get their front row seats, the members of the Giants 2010 team, got back to work Monday. Manager Bruce Bochy held a regular workout at AT&T Park.

The Texas Rangers were planning to fly into SF from Dallas at some point Monday as well, and will soon join them on the field.

One of the great storylines of the week involves a current Ranger who is former Giant. Catcher Bengie Molina was in the starting lineup for San Francisco on Opening Day, but was traded mid-season and is now a member of the Rangers.

Molina is still a fan favorite and has close friends who wear orange and black.

He is also the only person who will be playing in the World Series who is basically guaranteed to walk away with a World Series ring no matter who wins. He played long enough to qualify for both the Giants and the Rangers.
