Streaking Gulls Win 5th Straight

San Diego gets OT win to topple San Jose on the road

For the first two periods the Gulls just didn’t look all that good in a San Jose Saturday matinee. They trailed the Barracuda 2-0 (and if it hadn’t been for a stellar performance from goalie Kevin Boyle it would have been worse than that), prompting a 2nd intermission pep talk.

“I just thought it was an emotionless game and not just by our team, but by theirs as well,” said Gulls Head Coach Dallas Eakins. “There is nobody in the stands and there wasn’t a lot of action out there. It was very simple. It was asking ourselves, are we involved in the game at critical moments and how could we be our best? I thought we played much better in the third.”

Darn right they did.

Kevin Roy and Eric Fehr scored 87 seconds apart to force overtime and Dennis Rasmussen got the game-winner in overtime to give the Gulls a 3-2 win, running their winning streak to five straight games.

In addition to Boyle’s 37 saves the Gulls stayed in the game thanks to their special teams. San Diego held the Barracuda scoreless on four power plays and has killed 25 of the last 26 power plays they’ve faced.

During their 5-game winning streak the Gulls moved from seventh place to second place in the loaded Pacific Division. Same teams meet again on Sunday afternoon in the Bay Area.
