Stadium Wars, Episode IV: The Carson Situation

NBC 7 SportsWrap's Derek Togerson offers this analysis on the latest dealings behind the Chargers' stadium scramble.

It is a dark time for football fans in San Diego. Disney is now involved in the Chargers and Raiders stadium project in Carson.

At least, the House of the Mouse Chairman and CEO Bob Iger will have input in the design and construction of a proposed facility, IF the league chooses their proposal over the one in Inglewood that’s still well ahead of Carson in terms of preparation.

But that’s neither here nor there. It’s just too fitting that Disney would be involved. They’re currently working on construction plans for a new Star Wars land and this whole situation is a lot like the famous space opera.

You have an evil organization bent on galactic domination that will stop at nothing to get what it wants, which is complete control of all within its reach. That could describe the Empire or the NFL.

The Empire uses a Death Star and fear to get its systems to fall in line and do its bidding. The NFL uses the threat of relocation to Los Angeles, the place where the Death Star was housed (and eventually detonated), to get its markets to build new stadiums and increase its revenue.

In San Diego, St. Louis and Oakland you have a rebellion: the fan bases. In San Diego it’s led by Save Our Bolts, a rag-tag group trying desperately to oppose the overwhelming power of its adversary aided by a few members of the Old Republic: Mayor Faulconer and Ron Roberts, who are trying to find a way to return order to the galaxy by keeping the Chargers in San Diego.

However, they’re running up against a dark lord with power of his own: Darth Fabiani. Working for Grand Moff Spanos he wages war against the rebels at every turn with the blessing of the man behind the scenes pulling all the strings: Emperor Goodell. He has already foreseen the NFL returning to L.A. and is now watching his plan unfold, awaiting the day he has a fully armed and operational battle station to move a team to.

If the Mayor’s Mission Valley site does not work there may be still be a chance for the football republic of San Diego: Anakin Briggs.

With his Downtown stadium initiative he could bring balance to the situation, keeping the Chargers in San Diego in a way the fans and team are happy. Or, he could turn to the dark side, doing more harm than good and driving the team up Interstate 5 for good.

There will be many more twists and turns in the coming weeks. At this point the whole thing is so wild I would in no way be surprised if Fabiani announces he’s Faulconer’s father.
