Mark Grant is entering his 13th season as color analyst for the San Diego Padres on Channel 4 San Diego. Raised in Joliet, Illinois, he entered professional baseball out of high school and played for the Padres from 1987-1990. He lives in Alpine, with his wife of 20 years and three children.
Ron Donoho: Are you and [new Channel 4 booth partner] Mark Neely going to be identified as Mark & Mark?
Mark Grant: I will be known as the "Fat & Bald Mark."
RD: How are you going to make a possibly bad Padres team interesting on the air?
MG: We'll call 'em as we see 'em, and make our own fun in the booth.
RD: Are you optimistic about the Padres getting their act together on the field this season?
MG: Last year there were high expectations. That's what made it so difficult. Not a lot of expectations this year, so it should ease the blow if they are bad. I'm just anxious for any kind of baseball.
RD: What is the city of San Diego desperately lacking?
MG: A real world championship. Soccer doesn't count. Other than that, we've got it pretty good!
RD: What is your most recurring nighttime dream?
MG: I can't find my pants and the game is about to start and I'm the starting pitcher.
RD: What three people, living or dead, would you invite to a dinner party?
MG: Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard.
RD: Describe your ideal politician.
MG: Honest to a fault. Lays it all out there. One who'll admit he inhaled, and one who'll admit he or she had some fun in their office. Of course, a Republican.
