Scifres Joins Carolina Panthers

Former Chargers Punter Signs with Defending NFC Champs

After 13 seasons with the San Diego Chargers, punter Mike Scifres has found a new home.

The Carolina Panthers signed the veteran to a one-year contract Tuesday.

Scifres had spent his entire career with the Bolts who selected him back in the 5th round of the 2003 Draft out of Western Illinois University.

Scifres was often one of the unsung heroes in recent seasons as a consistent performer on the special teams unit and also a respected presence in the Chargers locker room.

"What I did for 13 years in San Diego I still feel that I’m capable of doing here," Scifres said, via Panthers.com. "I still feel I can play. Going into the draft, I knew there was a possibility I would end up getting released by San Diego.

"This is a new chapter, and it’s about the player I can be for this team."

San Diego added punter Drew Kaser in the sixth round of this year’s draft.

Kaser played at Texas A&M and is a former college teammate of current Chargers kicker Josh Lambo.
