San Diego Star Gets Futures Game Start at Petco Park

Joe Musgrove takes the mound first in his home town

The MLB Futures Game features some of the best prospects in all of baseball. That game was played on Sunday afternoon at Petco Park. Among the rising stars in the 2016 edition is Grossmont High School alum Joe Musgrove.

He was a first round pick of the Blue Jays in 2011 and is now in the Astros system. This year Musgrove advanced to Triple-A Fresno and now the 23-year-old has put himself in a position to be a September call-up with Houston.

Musgrove has 71 strikeouts and just nine walks this this year. That is the kind of command that managers love and it earned him the start in the annual showcase of the top up-and-coming talent in the game. NBC 7 SportsWrap’s Derek Togerson caught up with Musgrove before his start and found out Joe missed a very important phone call from his future Hall of Fame manager.
