Reyes, Mitchell Lead Padres Over Diamondbacks

Rookie OF keeps slugging while embattled pitcher makes good impression

When Spring Training started in February the Padres expected Bryan Mitchell to be a big part of their team in 2018 but didn't really have plans for Franmil Reyes to contribute much.

As it turns out, 2018 went exactly the opposite of that.

Reyes has become one of the most exciting power-hitting rookies in the game while Mitchell got demoted to the bullpen before losing three months on the disabled list with an elbow issue.

But on Monday night in Arizona both guys helped the Friars win a ballgame. Mitchell came off the DL to throw 5.0 innings of 1-run ball while Reyes hit a pair of homers in a 6-2 win over the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Mitchell gave up a 1st inning run but after that did not allow another hit and ended up getting his first win of the season (better late than never, right?). He got all the offense he needed from the big rookie outfielder.

Reyes hit a 3-run home run in the 2nd inning and added a solo shot in the 4th, both off Diamondbacks starter Zack Godley. It's the first multi-homer game of Franmil's career and extends his hitting streak to nine games, during which he's belted six home runs.

Catcher Austin Hedges tacked on two more runs with a bases loaded single in the top of the 8th inning.

The Padres and D-Backs finish their short 2-game set on Tuesday night in Phoenix with Joey Lucchesi on the mound against fellow lefty Robbie Ray.
