This is the weekend that Major League Baseball decided to have its annual "Players Weekend." It's where all the teams wear specialty uniforms with their chosen nicknames on the back.

Maybe at some point the Padres players will show up for "Players Weekend."

The Friars got hammered by the Red Sox 11-0 on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd at Petco Park. While the San Diego offense mustered just five hits, all of them singles, the Boston lineup was as good as it can be.

The first four hitters in their order ... Mookie Betts, Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez ... went a combined 10-for-16 with three doubles and two home runs. Martinez hit both the homers, one of them in the first innings off Padres starter Chris Paddack.

The rookie made the worst start of his professional career, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. The most amazing part of his night is Paddack, who's averaging more than a strikeout an inning, did not punch out a single batter.

This is certainly not the way the Padres wanted to start a 6-game homestand against the Red Sox and Dodgers, the teams that met in last year's World Series. The Padres can even the series on Saturday evening when Dinelson Lamet gets the start against Nathan Eovaldi.
