La Costa Canyon High School outfielder Mickey Moniak was the first off the boards in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft.
Moniak is the fifth San Diegan to be taken first overall in the MLB Draft since 2000.
The 6-foot 2-inch outfielder hit .471 this spring with six home runs, 44 RBI and a .921 slugging percentage when he was named the California Gatorade Player of the Year.
The 18 year old helped the U18 USA Baseball team win a gold medal last summer.
The left-handed hitting Moniak is described as having solid power to the gaps, explosive speed on the base paths and the best pure hitter in the draft.
Moniak’s father Matt played for San Diego State and his grandfather, William Moniak, spent six seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization.
He’s committed to UC Los Angeles, but is expected to sign with the Phillies. The deadline for draft picks is July 15.
