Friday was just a bad day for the Padres so let's just rip the Band-Aid off and make this as quick as possible.
After putting Fernando Tatis Jr. and Ian Kinsler on the Injured List (most likely for the rest of the season) they opened a weekend series in Philadelphia with an 8-4 loss to the Phillies.
Rookie starter Chris Paddack struck out six but only lasted 4.2 innings because he was leaving too many pitches over the middle of the plate. Paddack was touched up for five runs and surrendered a pair of home runs, one by Roman Quinn and another by J.T. Realmuto.
He gave way to fellow rookie Michel Baez, who gave up a 3-run HR to Bryce Harper that put the game out of reach in the 6th inning. Before that the outcome was still in doubt.
After falling behind 5-0 the Friars rallied for three runs in the top of the 6th. Rookie outfielder Josh Naylor, who had three hits, singled and scored on a wild pitch by Philly starter Vince Velasquez for San Diego's first run of the night. Rookie catcher Francisco Mejia, who had two hits, tripled to bring in Eric Hosmer then scored on a Wil Myers RBI groundout that cut the lead to 5-3.
The Friars got their final run in the 8th inning on a Hosmer RBI groundout. San Diego falls to 56-65 on the year with the loss. On Saturday Dinelson Lamet takes the mound against former Padres farmhand Zach Eflin.
