Padres Shut Out In Miami

Fernandez Beats Cashner In Duel Of Aces

You don't need me to tell you how bad the Padres offense has been through the first five games of the season. But when a shutout is not only not surprising, but partially expected, things have dipped to a serious low.

The Padres faced Marlins ace Jose Fernandez on Saturday night. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year has the kind of stuff legends are written about, so not a whole lot of people gave the San Diego offense much chance to out slug Miami.

Fernandez did not disappoint, striking out eight Padres in 6.2 shutout innings to lead the Marlins to a 5-0 win. Padres starter Andrew Cashner was solid, but not quite able to match Fernandez (who has never lost in 17 career starts at Marlins Park).

Cashner went six innings, whiffing six while giving up two runs. The first scored when Giancarlo Stanton's ground ball got by 3rd baseman Chase Headley in the third inning, bringing home that Fernandez kid.

It's usually not a good sign when the pitcher you are facing scores more runs than he allows. For the night, the Padres only mustered five hits. The only time they threatened to score was in the top of the third, when Fernandez allowed a hit then walked two straight hitters to load the bases with one out.

The "rally" ended one pitch later, when Seth Smith grounded in to a double play to end the inning.

The Padres have scored a mere eight runs in five games and have not scored more than two since their season-opening win against the Dodgers.
