Padres Lose in Lockett's MLB Debut

Offense Disappears While Rookie Righty Struggles

Padres rookie Walker Lockett navigated pretty well around any potential trouble in the first three innings of his Major League debut.

But in the fourth inning Friday night, the Reds started racking up the hits and Lockett was unable to stop the damage.

Jose Paraza tallied a season-high 3 RBI and finished with three hits. His two-run double in that fourth frame gave the Reds a 3-0 advantage and really put the pressure on Lockett.

Tucker Barnhart then quickly added a RBI single to push that lead to 4-0.

At that point, manager Andy Green yanked Lockett from the game after 3.2 innings and went to his bullpen.

Lockett’s final line included five walks, four hits and four earned runs allowed with two strikeouts.

The Padres offense basically took a nap for the first eight innings.  Travis Jankowski reached base twice and is hitting a solid .310 this season when batting leadoff.

But he was stranded both times and San Diego was held scoreless until the bottom of the ninth.

That was when Freddy Galvis lofted a fly ball to deep centerfield with two on and the Padres down to their final out.

Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton got leather on the ball but dropped it as he went jumping into the wall, allowing two runs to score.

It was generously ruled a triple by the scorekeeper, but the Padres will take it.

Unfortunately that rounded out all the scoring and the Friars still lost 7-2.

The loss snaps the Padres third three-game winning streak of the year.

Another Padres rookie – Eric Lauer – gets the starting nod Saturday against the Reds with first pitch slated for 5:40 p.m.

Former Mets star Matt Harvey takes the mound for Cincinnati.
