Padres Lose Again, Fall Below .500

Pirates take seriers behind another San Diego prep star

It took 47 games but for the first time in the 2019 season the San Diego Padres have something we have grown far too accustomed to: a losing record.

Sunday’s 6-4 loss to the Pirates at Petco Park gave Pittsburgh a 3-1 series win, dropping the Friars to 23-24 on the year ... and it’s another local kid who sent them there.

Grossmont High School alum Joe Musgrove bested his home town team for the second time in his career at Petco Park, just one day after fellow Foothiller Steven Brault (Musgrove’s rotation mate in 2011 in high school) got the win in relief. So Grossmont H.S. had more wins in this 4-game series than the Padres did.

Musgrove had a lead before he even took the mound. Padres starter Cal Quantrill, who was recalled on Sunday because Nick Margevicious was optioned to Double-A Amarillo, got beat up in the 1st inning. After a single and a sacrifice bunt Josh Bell singled to right to bring in Adam Frazier to make it 1-0 Pirates. Bryan Reynolds followed with a single and Colin Moran smoked a 3-run homer to centerfield to stake Musgrove to a 4-0 lead.

The local kid ran with it. Musgrove took a no-hitter into the 5th inning when Eric Hosmer broke it up with a solid single to left. In the 7th inning Musgrove had a 5-0 lead when the Padres offense finally woke up. Greg Garcia led off with a double and Alex Dickerson brought him home with a single to put the Padres on the board. Two batters later Hunter Renfroe launched a 3-run homer to center to make it a 5-4 lead and chase Musgrove.

The Padres never got any closer.

In the top of the 8th Moran singled in Reynolds for the final run of the game. The Friars have dropped seven of their last nine but might have the answer on Monday night when they start a 3-game set at Petco Park against Arizona. Chris Paddack, coming off the worst start of his big league career in a 6-3 loss to the Dodgers, is back on the mound against Luke Weaver.
