Padres Let Another One Slip Away

Inability To Score Runs Dooms San Diego Again

The ability to hit with runners in scoring position is a nice little took for a baseball team to have. Some may even say it's invaluable.

The ballclubs with the top six averages with runners in scoring position are either in first place, or within two games of a playoff spot (of course you have outliers like the first-place Pirates, but on average the point holds true).

The Padres are hitting .240 as a team, 24th in MLB, with runners in scoring position. In a related story, the Padres are in last place in the National League West, 15 games out of a playoff spot.

The Friars lost to the Mets 5-2 on Friday night at Petco Park. It comes as no surprise San Diego was 1-for-12 with RISP.

One of their runs came on a Will Venable solo homer, his team-leading 16th of the season. Problem is, 14 of those have come with nobody on base.

In his three at-bats with runners on, Venable struck out twice and grounded out to first.

Padres starter Ian Kennedy had his first rough outing since coming over from Arizona. Kennedy gave up three home runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss.
