Padres Hire Jed Hoyer as New GM

Padres hope a fresh face in the front office might turn things around

Jed Hoyer has been chosen as the next general manager of the Padres.

The Padres willhold a press conference around 2:30 on Monday so that CEO Jeff Morad can make a "major club announcement," according to the team's press release.

The club was not prepared to make a formal announcement during the weekend, but a club source told the Associated Press about the move on Saturday.

The 35-year-old Red Sox assistant general manager is set to replace Kevin Towers, who was the Padres GM for 14 seasons.

Hoyer started his career as a baseball operations intern with the Red Sox in 2002.  He will take over a young squad that finished in fourth place in the National League West in 2009 with a 75-87 record.  The team showed some promise going 33-25 during the final two months of the season.

Last week the club annoucemened that manager Bud Black has invited his entire coaching staff back for next season.
