One of the studs in the Padres loaded farm system is raking.
Lake Elsinore Storm catcher Austin Allen was named the California League Player of the Month for July. Allen led the league in hits (46), home runs (10), RBI (32), total bases (85) and slugging percentage (.691), while finishing second in runs (27), extra-base hits (18) and OPS (1.089). He also had 13 multi-hit games, three of those being four-hit games.
Allen is one of the Padres' Top-30 prospects. The left-handed hitting catcher was a 4th round pick in the 2015 Draft out of the Florida Institute of Technology.
The Friars got another bit of good news when they added Carter Capps to the bullpen before the start of their series against the Reds in Cincinnati.
Capps and his leaping delivery were recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Monday, which just so happens to be the right-handed reliever's 27th birthday. To make room the Friars sent lefty Buddy Baumann back to Texas.
Capps was turning in to one of the most effective bullpen arms in the National League when he underwent Tommy John surgery. He came to the Padres in the deal that sent Andrew Cashner to Miami in July of 2016.
The man who jumps a few inches off the pitching rubber before throwing a pitch last appeared in a big league game on August 2, 2015, somewhat ironically against the Padres. That scoreless outing that dropped his season ERA to 1.16 over 31.0 innings.
