Padres Fill Up 40-Man Roster

Friars protect two more left-handed pitchers before deadline

Padres General Manager A.J. Preller added two more guys to their 40-man roster ahead of the Monday deadline. Everyone on the 40-man is protected and ineligible to be taken in the Rule 5 Draft.

The guys who get to stay with San Diego are left-handed pitchers Brad Wieck and Jose Castillo. It's Castillo who you might want to keep an eye on.

The 21-year-old lefty was a breakout star pitching for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. He had his signature moment against Team USA, striking out All-Star Nolan Arenado with a 3-2 changeup and the bases loaded.

Castillo spent the 2017 season between Single-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio and might earn an invitation to Major League Spring Training in February.

Wieck is not a small human. The 26-year-old is 6-9 and weighs 255 pounds. He split the season between San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso, pitching to a 4.06 ERA in 40 relief appearances.

There were no big surprises in the makeup of the 40-man. But if the Friars do decide to add anyone else, via trade or free agency, or if they select any players in the Rule 5 Draft they will have to bump someone off.

The last two years the Padres have taken RHP Luis Perdomo, OF Jabari Blash, INF/OF Allen Cordoba, RHP Miguel Diaz and C Luis Torrens at Rule 5 draftees and all of them made the Opening Day roster.
