The Padres opened up their final series before the All-Star break on Friday night at Petco Park. The three game set against the Chicago Cubs will close out their seven game homestand.

Friar’s outfielder Travis Jankowski is known more for his speed and defense then his power, but he had no problem smashing a two-run homer in the top of the second inning to give the Padres a 3-2 lead.

Former University of San Diego star Kris Bryant still has many fans here in San Diego. The USD product helped the Cubs tie the game in the fifth inning with a RBI double down the first base line which scored Javier Baez.

The Padres were leading 4-3 in the ninth when closer Brad Hand made a mistake. Anthony Rizzo smacked a RBI double to the gap and Jayson Heyward scored. That tied the game at four runs apiece and sent it into extra innings.

In the 10th inning Baez took off for second base and Austin Hedges sailed the throw. Baez hustled to third base but Manuel Margot dropped the ball. Baez scored the game winning run all the way from first base. The Padres lost 5-4 in 10 innings.

The second game of the series is on Saturday July 14 at 7:10 p.m. at Petco Park.
