Padres Drop Series Finale against Athletics

Villanueva Hits 17th Home Run of the Season

There’s nothing like afternoon baseball on the Fourth of July; except perhaps for a victory on Independence Day. The patriotic uniforms could not help the Padres against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum. The Friars dropped the series finale against the A’s 4-2.

The Padres offense got a spark in the second inning thanks to Christian Villanueva. The Mexican-born player sent his 17th homer of the season to left field and gave the Padres the 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the second inning Oakland’s Stephen Piscotty doubled to left center field and plated Matt Olson to get his team on the board. Piscotty hit two doubles for three RBI to help his team seal the victory.

The Friars have now lost 12 of their last 15 games.

The Padres will start a four game series on Thursday in Arizona against the Diamondbacks at 6:40 p.m. PST from Chase Field.
