Padres Come Up Short in Miami

San Diego Drops First Game on 10-game Road Trip

After winning seven of ten games in their recent home stand, the Padres stumbled in their first game back on the road, losing 4-0 in Miami.

The Marlins received a stellar outing from starting pitcher Caleb Smith who pitched 5.1 scoreless innings and even added a RBI single at the plate to help his own cause.

Eric Lauer did not pitch poorly for the Friars, but he didn’t get any help on offense.

Lauer worked five innings and fell to 2-4 on the season after allowing three earned runs on six hits and an eye-popping seven walks.

The majority of the Padres offense came from the first two batters in the lineup. Jose Pirela batted leadoff and had two base knocks while Eric Hosmer added a double and a single.

San Diego loaded the bases with one down in the top of the sixth, but Cory Spangenberg grounded into a rally-killing double play.

That was the only major threat from the visitors all game.

Tyson Ross takes the mound for the Friars Saturday at 1:10.

Miami plans to start Dan Straily.
