A pipe burst at Coors Field on Sunday, flooding the 1st base line and causing a 1st inning delay because it looked like a wading pool was set up on the warning track.
That was, like, the 12th strangest thing that happened at Coors Field on Sunday.
Like they did on Friday night when they scored six runs in the 9th inning of a 16-12 win, the Friars pulled off another improbable comeback in a 14-13 win to split the series in Denver.
This time they scored four times in the 9th inning to erase a 13-10 lead. Valhalla High School alum Greg Garcia got the big blow with a 2-out, 2-run triple to tie it up. He scored when pitcher Matt Strahm, who was in to pinch-hit because the Padres were out of position players, drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the game-winning run.
Hunter Renfroe hit two more home runs to give him 23 for the season, just three off the Major League lead held by reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich. Rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. added three hits and scored three times to run his season batting average to .338.
However, while the offense was amazing the starting pitching was atrocious. Rookie lefty Nick Margevicious gave up nine runs on 11 hits and only got four outs before being pulled.
Reliever Phil Maton also got hit hard, giving up three runs in none inning. But other than that Luis Perdomo, Trey Wingenter, Brad Wieck, Gerardo Reyes and Kirby Yates combined to toss 6.2 innings of 1-run ball. Yates tossed a perfect 9th with a pair of strikeouts to earn his 24th save of the season.
