Padres Beat Cubs in Peoria

Peavy looks sharp in Spring tune-up

He's only thrown 44 pitches this Spring, but it's looking like Jake Peavy may be headed for a special season.  Peavy only gave up one hit in three innings in the Padres' 4-2 win over the Cubs on Sunday in Peoria.  In his two starts Jake has only given up two hits and no runs, but this stat line has one even more impressive number.

Jake has not struck out a single hitter yet.  His bread and butter is the punchout, but Peavy in the past has gotten in trouble trying too hard to put hitters away.  Lots of whiffs mean lots of pitches, so he was not working terribly deep into games.  If Peavy has learned how to get outs without relying on strikeouts, he'll be more effective than ever and could win 20 games for the first time in his career.

Whether or not he does that in a Padres uniform remains to be seen.  We do know his next start will be on Saturday the 7th in Toronto in the opening game of the World Baseball Classic.
